Cape Cod's waters are teeming with game fish, and on this half-day trip, you've got a shot at some real beauties. Let's break down the stars of the show:
Striped Bass: The heavyweight champ of Cape Cod, stripers are the fish that dreams are made of. These silver-sided bruisers can top 50 pounds, and they put up a fight that'll test your drag and your biceps. Spring through fall, you'll find them prowling the shorelines and rips, eager to smash topwater lures or inhale a well-presented bait. The thrill of a big striper erupting on your offering is something you'll never forget.
Bluefish: If stripers are the heavyweights, blues are the light-heavyweight brawlers of the Cape. These toothy predators are pure aggression with fins. They'll hit just about anything that moves and fight like their tails are on fire. Bluefish show up in force during the summer months, often creating frenzies on the surface as they chase bait. Hooking into a big blue is like being connected to a living lightning bolt – hold on tight!
Summer Flounder (Fluke): Don't let their flat profile fool you – fluke are ambush predators with serious attitude. These bottom-dwellers lie in wait, blending in with the sandy seafloor until an unsuspecting baitfish swims by. Summer is prime time for fluke fishing, and the technique of drifting with bait or jigs can be surprisingly addictive. Plus, there's nothing quite like the satisfaction of outsmarting a fish that can literally look at your bait with both eyes at once.
Winter Flounder: The cooler cousin of the summer flounder, these fish are a favorite for light-tackle enthusiasts. They might not grow as large as their summer relatives, but what they lack in size, they make up for in numbers and taste. Early spring is the ticket for winter flounder, and the methodical approach to finding and catching them can be a zen-like experience. It's a great species for anglers who enjoy a more relaxed pace and appreciate the nuances of bottom fishing.
There's something special about fishing Cape Cod that keeps anglers returning year after year. Maybe it's the way the light plays on the water as you're trolling for blues. Or perhaps it's the heart-stopping moment when a big striper follows your lure right up to the boat. It could be the rich maritime history that surrounds you, or the chance to swap stories with your captain about the one that got away.
But let's be real – it's probably the fish. Cape Cod's waters are incredibly productive, offering opportunities for both quantity and quality catches. One day you might be hauling in fluke after fluke, the next you could be locked in an epic battle with a cow striper. The diversity of species and fishing environments means every trip is a new adventure.
And let's not forget the scenery. As you're drifting along, you're treated to views of pristine beaches, historic lighthouses, and maybe even a curious seal popping up to check out your catch. It's not just fishing – it's a full-on Cape Cod experience that engages all your senses.
So there you have it, folks – a half-day of private fishing that packs in all the best Cape Cod has to offer. With Between Alarms Charters, you're not just booking a fishing trip; you're setting yourself up for memories that'll last a lifetime. Absolutely fantastic. Wanted to go for Striped Bass and we were directed to Tuna instead. Never in my life would I have thought to have such a great opportunity. The resources they have are incomparable.

Bluefish are hard-fighting predators that migrate to Cape Cod waters from mid-June to October. They average 3-5 pounds but can top 20. Look for them churning up bait near the surface – what we call a "bluefish blitz." They'll hit just about anything shiny or oily. These toothy fish love structure, so target jetties, rips, and drop-offs. Early morning and dusk are prime times. Bluefish fight like crazy, often jumping and making blistering runs. They're also tasty eating when prepared right. Here's a tip: If you see birds diving, that's usually bluefish underneath. Motor upwind of the action, cut the engine, and drift into casting range. Use wire leaders – those teeth will slice through mono in a heartbeat. Hold on tight when they hit!
Striped Bass are the crown jewel of Cape Cod fishing. These powerful, silver-sided fish with distinctive black stripes can top 50 pounds. They migrate through our waters from May to October, following schools of bait fish. Look for stripers around structure - jetties, rips, and rocky shorelines. Dawn and dusk are prime feeding times. Live eels, chunked mackerel, or swimming plugs all work well. Stripers fight hard, often making long runs and spectacular jumps. Here's an insider tip: On calm nights, cruise slowly along the beach looking for the telltale "nervous water" of bait being chased. Cut your engine, drift in, and make long casts with topwater lures. The explosive strikes will get your heart racing!
Summer Flounder, or fluke, are masters of camouflage. These left-eyed flatfish blend into sandy or muddy bottoms, lying in wait to ambush prey. Most run 15-20 inches, but trophy fish over 10 pounds aren't uncommon. You'll find fluke in bays, inlets, and offshore waters from spring through fall. They prefer warmer temps, so focus on shallow flats that heat up quickly. Drifting with live bait or bucktails works well. Fluke put up a good scrap and are excellent table fare. For best results, use a slow retrieve with short hops along the bottom. When you feel that telltale thump, pause before setting the hook. These fish often grab bait by the tail first, so give them time to get it all the way in their mouth.
Winter Flounder, aka Black Back, are bottom-dwelling flatfish with both eyes on the right side. They typically grow 9-12 inches long but can reach 25 inches and 8 pounds. You'll find them in estuaries and along the continental shelf, often hiding in vegetation or rocks. Winter Flounder are masters of camouflage, changing color to match their surroundings. Best fishing is from fall through spring when they're most active. Use sea worms or clams on a sensitive rod to detect their subtle bites. These fish put up a good fight for their size and make excellent eating. A local trick: Try fishing the dropping tide near creek mouths or channel edges. The outgoing water concentrates bait and attracts hungry flounder. When you feel that light tap, give them a moment before setting the hook. Patience pays off with these crafty bottom-feeders.
