Striped Bass: The crown jewel of Cape Cod fishing, stripers are the fish that dreams are made of. These powerful, silver-sided predators can grow to over 50 pounds, and they put up a fight that'll test your arms and your drag. They're known for their hard pulls and occasional airborne acrobatics. Stripers typically show up in May and stick around through October, with peak action often in June and September. What makes them so special? It's the combination of their size, their willingness to hit a variety of baits and lures, and the satisfaction of outsmarting these cagey fish in shallow water.
Bluefish: If you're looking for pure, drag-screaming action, bluefish are your ticket. These toothy critters are like wind-up toys with fins – once they're on, it's non-stop energy until they hit the deck. Blues typically show up in late spring and hang around through fall. They're notorious for their aggressive strikes and tendency to travel in schools, meaning when you find them, you're in for fast action. Pound for pound, they're some of the hardest fighting fish in the Northeast, and their willingness to hit topwater lures makes for some explosive visual strikes you won't soon forget.
Winter Flounder: Don't let the name fool you – these flatfish are available well beyond the cold months. Also known as blackback flounder, these bottom-dwellers are prized for their delicate, sweet flavor. While they might not put up the acrobatic fights of other species, the challenge lies in finding them and presenting your bait just right. Winter flounder typically feed along sandy or muddy bottoms, often in deeper holes or channels. The satisfaction comes from feeling that subtle take and setting the hook just right. They're most active in the cooler months, making them a great target in spring and fall when other species might be less cooperative.
Summer Flounder (Fluke): The larger cousins of winter flounder, fluke are aggressive predators that put up a surprisingly good fight for a flatfish. They start showing up in late spring and provide action through the summer months. Fluke hunting is all about reading the bottom and working your bait or jig just right to entice a strike. They have a knack for short-striking baits, so detecting the bite and setting the hook takes some finesse. The reward? Not only a good tussle but also some of the best-eating fish in the sea. There's nothing quite like the satisfaction of outsmarting a big doormat fluke.
Cape Cod's waters are calling, and Between Alarms Charters is your ticket to some of the best inshore fishing the Northeast has to offer. Absolutely fantastic. Wanted to go for Striped Bass and we were directed to Tuna instead. Never in my life would I have thought to have such a great opportunity. The resources they have are incomparable.

Bluefish are one of the hardest-fighting fish you'll find in Cape Cod waters. These aggressive predators show up in mid-June and stick around through October. Most run 3-10 pounds, but we occasionally see 20-pounders. Look for them churning up bait schools near the surface - that's called a blitz. They'll hit just about any lure, but metal spoons and poppers work great. Bluefish put up an incredible fight, often leaping clear out of the water. Be careful handling them though - those teeth are razor sharp. The meat can be strong-tasting, but it's delicious when prepared right. Bleed and ice them immediately for the best flavor. A local tip: when you see birds diving, that's often a sign bluefish are feeding below. Head for the commotion and get ready for some serious action.

Striped Bass are the crown jewel of Cape Cod fishing. These powerful fish migrate through our waters from spring to fall, with most weighing 15-30 pounds. Big ones can top 50 pounds! Look for stripers around structure like jetties, rocky shorelines, and sandbars. They feed actively at dawn and dusk. Live bait like eels or mackerel is deadly, but they'll also hit topwater plugs and soft plastics. Stripers put up an incredible fight, with strong runs and acrobatic leaps. They're also excellent eating, with firm, white meat. For a local tip: fish the outgoing tide around inlet mouths - stripers love to ambush bait getting swept out to sea. Just remember, these fish are heavily regulated, so always check current size and bag limits before keeping any.

Summer Flounder, or Fluke as we call them, are a blast to catch here on the Cape. These flatfish typically run 15-20 inches, but trophy-sized 10-pounders aren't unheard of. You'll find them on sandy bottoms near drop-offs and structure. They're ambush predators, using their camouflage to blend in with the seafloor. September through November is prime fluke season as they fatten up for winter. Drift fishing with live bait like minnows or strips of squid works well. Use a bucktail jig to keep your bait near the bottom. Fluke have a reputation for being finicky, so a slow retrieve with occasional twitches can trigger strikes. They're not known for long runs, but their initial hits can be surprisingly strong. As for eating, fluke are some of the best-tasting fish in these waters - mild, flaky, and great on the grill.

Winter Flounder, also called Blackbacks, are a favorite target here on Cape Cod. These flat, oval-shaped fish typically run 15-20 inches and prefer colder waters. You'll find them hanging out on sandy or muddy bottoms in bays and estuaries. Spring is prime time as they move inshore to spawn. Anglers love their delicate, sweet flavor - some of the best eating around. They can be tricky to hook, so use a sensitive rod to detect their light bites. I like to fish them with sea worms or clams on a small hook. Keep your bait close to the bottom and fish slowly. These guys aren't known for big fights, but landing a keeper-sized blackback is always satisfying. Remember to check current regulations, as limits have tightened up in recent years to protect the population.
